Job Description

The Production Logistics Director is responsible for overseeing all internal logistics functions supporting U.S.-based vehicle production. This includes the end-to-end management of safety, quality, policy deployment, operational progress, labor and budgetary control within the logistics environment. The Director leads and develops logistics staff, enforces safety compliance, drives KPI improvement, and ensures alignment with strategic production goals. The role requires strong leadership, cross-functional coordination, and operational oversight to stabilize production logistics and improve throughput.

The Director will also serve a key leadership role in launching the new U.S. facility, including team structure design, oversight of leadership hiring, statement of work (SOW) approval, and alignment with stakeholders to ensure seamless ramp-up and long-term operational stability.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and enforcement of logistics safety policies in compliance with OSHA and company standards
  • Oversee logistics-related quality assurance, workflow execution, and production support readiness
  • Drive planning and execution of logistics policies covering warehousing, transportation, material flow, and operational procedures
  • Lead, develop, and mentor department staff through performance management, training, and cross-functional communication
  • Identify and resolve system-level problems impacting logistics efficiency or safety
  • Manage logistics departmental budget and support cost-efficiency initiatives
  • Serve as a key contributor to the launch of new facilities, including team structure planning, hiring support, and program execution coordination

Required Education, Training, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in automotive or logistics (experience with Japanese companies preferred)
  • At least 5 years of leadership or managerial experience in logistics or operations

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Advanced understanding of logistics operations, including transportation, warehousing, and material flow
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements and environmental regulations
  • Leadership and strategic decision-making skills
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, and personnel development skills
  • Ability to lead and support cross-functional teams and initiatives
  • Experience implementing logistics performance tracking and continuous improvement systems
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to create, revise, and manage documentation and reports

Preferred Skills, Knowledgem, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with Lean logistics, KPI systems, and structured problem-solving tools (5 Whys, PDCA, etc.)
  • Experience supporting new plant start-ups or launch programs
  • Knowledge of manufacturing support logistics and production part control systems
  • Japanese language skills preferred
  • Experience working in Japanese corporate environments is a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in an active manufacturing/logistics environment with exposure to machinery, noise, and varied temperatures
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, or lift materials up to 25 lbs regularly and up to 60 lbs occasionally
  • Occasional use of basic tools, measuring devices, and computer equipment
  • Must be able to wear PPE including safety shoes, glasses, and hearing protection as required
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, weekends, or holidays as needed to support production
  • Domestic and international travel required, including training in Michigan and Japan
